Lukashenko Urges Belarus Banks to Expand Crypto Use Amid Sanctions
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has directed the nation's banking sector to aggressively adopt cryptocurrencies as a countermeasure against Western sanctions. The move comes amid projections that Belarusian crypto exchanges will process $3 billion in external payments by year-end.
Speaking at a meeting with central and commercial bank executives, Lukashenko framed digital assets as critical for economic survival. "The national economy, and with it the Belarusian banking sector, have faced unprecedented challenges," he stated, referencing EU and US sanctions that have crippled traditional financial channels.
The government plans to implement an instant payment system and adopt advanced digital payment technologies before 2025. This push follows earlier crypto-friendly legislation that established Belarus as one of Eastern Europe's more progressive jurisdictions for digital asset innovation.
